6 September 2011 ISC/CD Statement on the Detention of Belarusian Human Rights Activist Ales Bialitski

The ISC/CD joins with numerous other governmental and non-governmental organizations in condemning the unjust arrest and detention of prominent Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski by the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko and calls on the Lukashenko regime to end the harassment of all democracy and human rights activists in Belarus. 1 July 2011 Lithuania Hosts Sixth Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies

Vilnius, Lithuania hosted the Sixth Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies on July 1. The International Steering Committee of the Community of Democracies organized the Civil Society Forum of the Vilnius Ministerial on June 29 and ensured a strong presence of civil society throughout the days of the Ministerial. More than 120 democracy activists and civil society leaders from around the world participated in the Forum, discussing the most pressing needs for advancing democracy and how the Community of Democracies can address those needs. 25-26 May 2011 Europe and its Neighborhood:
Towards a Renewed Partnership for Democracy?

Reflecting on recent developments in Tunisia, Egypt, Belarus, and other countries in the European neighborhood, the ISC/CD was joined by the European Partnership for Democracy in organizing the Brussels Roundtable. Democracy activists met with European officials to discuss lessons learned, opportunities missed, and strategies for better supporting democracy in the region. 7- 9 April 2011 Rosario Civil Society Roundtable on Democracy in the Americas

In partnership with the Latin American & Caribbean Network for Democracy (LACND), the Argentina New Generation Foundation and the World Movement for Democracy, CCD helped organize a 3-day meeting on issues related to the CD working groups in Rosario, Argentina from April 7 - 9, 2011. Over 80 civil society leaders and democracy activists from the region attended and discussed issues such as gender equality; good governance & corruption, enabling & protecting civil society; democracy education and others. 28 January 2011 ISC/CD Issues Statement with Recommendations on Next Steps in Tunisia

Reflecting on recent dramatic events in Tunisia, the ISC/CD has made recommendations for advancing the cause of democracy in the country. Focusing on possible steps to be taken both in Tunisia and by the international community, the ISC/CD believes that consideration of these principles increases the chances of a positive, democratic outcome. 9-10 January 2011 Doha Civil Society Roundtable on Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa

The ISC/CD partnered with the Arab Democracy Foundation to convene a roundtable of more than 35 activists, researchers, and experts from the MENA region in Doha from January 9-10. Set against the backdrop of escalating protests in Tunisia, the participants identified a series of recommendations to the members of the Community of Democracies to strengthen policies on democracy support and human rights. Also discussed was the development of an Arab Democracy Charter to establish a benchmark for democracy and human rights in the region. Read more about the Doha Roundtable
