Middle East/North Africa Civil Society Roundtable on Democracy From January 10-11, CCD held a civil society roundtable in Doha, Qatar to discuss issues of democracy and human rights facing the Middle East and North Africa. Participants developed a series of recommendations to be presented to the governments of the Community of Democracies at the June 30-July 1 Vilnius Ministerial. This meeting was held as protests in Tunisia were strengthening, which culminated in the collapse of the regime only days later and provided a new opening for the development of democracy in the MENA region. |
Asia Civil Society Roundtable on Democracy The Ulaanbaatar Roundtable brought together more than 35 democracy activists from Asia to develop recommendations to the Vilnius Ministerial on democracy support in the region. The meeting focused on the themes of the current CD Working Groups to develop practical ideas that could be implemented by democratic governments. |
Krakow High Level Democracy Meeting (10th Anniversary of the Community of Democracies) From July 2-4, 2010, the High Level Democracy Meeting commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Community of Democracies took place in Krakow, Poland. The event, organized by the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland with the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies, hosted over 100 democracy and human rights activists, representatives of non-governmental organizations, international and national press in addition to ministers and ambassadors from over 70 democratic countries from around the world, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Foreign Minister of Sweden Carl Bildt, President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, Foreign Minister of Indonesia Raden Natalegawa and many others. Also in attendance were former heads of state as special guests, NGO participants, young diplomats, parliamentarians and one of the CD's founders, former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. |
Africa Civil Society Roundtable on Democracy The first of five civil society roundtables on democracy was held in Pretoria from 21-23 February. This meeting was organized in partnership with the World Movement for Democracy and IDASA. More than 40 participants from 15 countries gathered to discuss the issues facing democracy in Africa, with the goal of developing recommendations on democracy promotion for the Community of Democracies and democratic governments from around the world while further discussing civil society efforts to support the ratification of the African Union's African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. |
